Am I a Candidate for Outpatient Knee Replacement Surgery?

Most patients that are considered a candidate for knee replacement may also be candidates for outpatient knee replacement. It may be the best option for someone motivated and healthy enough to be discharged home on the same day as the surgery. You may be required to do some prehabilitation exercises before the surgery to strengthen the surrounding muscles that support the knee joint, and you need to demonstrate a positive mental attitude and willingness to participate in your recovery after discharge actively.

Outpatient knee replacement procedures are performed in a technologically advanced facility that utilizes cutting-edge techniques to optimize healing and improve joint function. Surgeons and their teams use these questions as screening measures to select the best candidates for outpatient replacement.

  1. Do you, the patient, want same-day knee replacement surgery?
  2. For this patient, is the surgery appropriate for outpatient treatment?
  3. Is the patient in good health and active?
  4. Does the patient have help and home adequately set up for post-surgical care?

Patients with more serious, uncontrolled, or multiple medical conditions may require monitoring in a hospital setting for one night or more. In some cases, patients with medical conditions such as coronary artery disease, diabetes, or morbid obesity might need to stay at the hospital or surgery center for 1-2 days before they get discharged to go home. The outpatient knee replacement goal is to provide the same (or better outcome) as inpatient knee replacement while reducing costs, increasing patient comfort, and avoiding risks associated with staying at the hospital.
